Front End Engineer (React, Typescript)

About The Role

Motional is seeking a highly skilled Staff Front End Engineer to join its Web Visualization Tooling team. This strategic role involves developing and maintaining critical web tooling and visualization systems that enhance feedback loops for machine learning engineers and improve the performance and adaptability of our autonomous vehicle systems. As a key contributor, you will drive the development of modern frontend ecosystems using technologies such as React, TypeScript, and Vue, ensuring scalable, high-performance, and user-centric interfaces. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including ML, UX, data services, and data annotation, to design intuitive, data-heavy workflows that meet real-world operational needs. Your expertise will be instrumental in establishing best practices, mentoring junior engineers, and delivering mission-critical UI systems that support internal stakeholders and external customers alike.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in front end development with strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architecture
• Proficiency in Vue.js framework
• Experience designing and building user-facing visual applications with a focus on UX and usability
• Strong understanding of performance optimization, scalability, and maintainability in frontend systems
• Able to work independently with high ownership and drive projects to completion
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and delegate effectively
• Established technical design and documentation habits
• Experience collaborating directly with customers to identify needs and develop solutions
• Bonus: Project management expertise, familiarity with backend systems (Node, Python), experience in game development or 3D visualization
• Strong organizational skills and a quick learner with a passion for continuous improvement

Responsibilities

• Drive the establishment and adherence to cross-team standards and best practices for web development
• Own and coordinate cross-functional collaboration to ensure timely and effective delivery of projects
• Architect and scale a modern frontend ecosystem leveraging React, TypeScript, and Vue.js
• Collaborate with ML, UX, data services, and other teams to align tooling with operational workflows and user needs
• Build and maintain mission-critical UI systems used by internal teams and external stakeholders
• Design user experiences for complex, data-intensive workflows that enhance usability and efficiency
• Implement performance, scalability, and maintainability best practices in all frontend initiatives
• Ship features rapidly in a product-driven environment, embracing iterative development and continuous delivery
• Mentor junior engineers, share knowledge, and promote technical excellence within the team
• Create comprehensive technical documentation and design specifications for frontend systems
• Engage with customers and stakeholders to understand foundational needs and develop tailored solutions
