About the Role
Motional is seeking a highly skilled Staff Front End Engineer to join its Web Visualization Tooling team. This pivotal role involves leading the development of critical web tooling and visualization systems that enhance feedback loops for machine learning engineers and improve the performance and adaptability of our autonomous vehicle systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and scaling a modern frontend ecosystem utilizing technologies such as React, TypeScript, and Vue. They will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including ML, UX, data services, and data annotation—to ensure that tooling aligns with real-world workflows and internal customer needs. The role demands a proactive individual with a passion for creating user-centric visual applications, ensuring high standards of performance, scalability, and maintainability. The engineer will also drive best practices, mentor junior team members, and contribute to a product-driven environment focused on rapid iteration and delivery.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architecture
- Experience with Vue.js
- Strong understanding of UX principles and usability
- Ability to work independently with high ownership and autonomy
- Excellent organizational and learning aptitude
- Effective interpersonal and mentorship skills
- Experience in technical design, documentation, and cross-team collaboration
- Ability to work directly with customers to identify needs and deliver solutions

Responsibilities
- Drive the establishment and enforcement of cross-team standards and best practices for web development
- Own and manage cross-team collaboration to ensure timely and effective delivery of projects
- Architect and scale a modern frontend ecosystem utilizing React, TypeScript, and Vue.js
- Collaborate with ML, UX, data services, and data annotation teams to align tooling with operational workflows
- Build mission-critical UI systems used internally by various teams
- Design and implement experiences for complex, data-heavy workflows
- Optimize frontend performance, scalability, and maintainability
- Ship features rapidly, iterate based on feedback, and adapt to a product-driven environment
- Mentor junior engineers and delegate tasks effectively to foster team growth
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and design standards
- Engage directly with customers to understand their needs and develop tailored solutions
