With a rich history of innovation and customer-centric solutions, Manulife operates across multiple markets, including Canada, the United States, and Asia, offering a comprehensive range of insurance, wealth, and asset management services. About The Role

We are seeking a self-motivated Front-End Engineer to join our dynamic team, responsible for building and maintaining our internal React component library that implements Manulife's enterprise design system. This library supports over 100 active digital properties across our Canadian and US segments and is endorsed at the enterprise architecture level as the standard for React development. The role involves designing accessible, well-tested components, tooling, and documentation that empower thousands of engineers to deliver consistent, high-quality user experiences. As a product engineering role, the library is treated as a product, with developers as its primary customers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with designers, architects, and product teams to enhance our front-end capabilities, advance AI-native tooling, and help evolve a shared component core that supports multiple platforms. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence enterprise-wide front-end development practices, promote accessibility standards, and contribute to innovative AI integrations, all within a collaborative and agile environment.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience building production front-end applications or shared libraries in complex enterprise environments
  • Deep expertise in React and TypeScript, with modern CSS skills
  • Practical experience in accessibility, including semantic HTML, ARIA practices, focus and keyboard management, and assistive technology testing
  • Proven track record in building reusable libraries, design systems, or shared platforms used by multiple teams
  • Strong testing discipline across unit, integration, visual regression, and automated accessibility checks
  • Familiarity with monorepos, CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and semantic versioning
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of articulating technical vision and trade-offs to diverse audiences
  • Understanding of agile methodologies, DevOps principles, test-driven development, and continuous integration practices

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain accessible, high-quality React components, design tokens, and tooling aligned with the enterprise design system
  • Ensure components meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards, implementing ARIA practices, keyboard interactions, and assistive technology support
  • Shape durable component APIs, considering backwards compatibility, semantic versioning, deprecation, and migration strategies
  • Enhance documentation platforms, live code sandboxes, examples, and Figma integrations to facilitate easy adoption and learning for teams
  • Contribute to AI-native tooling development, including MCP server, Copilot agent skills, and generative UI guardrails for accessible, on-brand interfaces
  • Support the evolution of a shared headless component core for web, mobile, and future platforms
  • Triaging issues, reviewing external contributions, and supporting delivery teams within a large engineering community
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to identify pain points and accelerate the delivery of new business value through agile practices

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range between $86,100.00 CAD and $136,100.00 CAD, commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Comprehensive health, dental, mental health, vision, and wellness benefits
  • Short-term and long-term disability, life, and AD&D insurance coverage
  • Retirement savings plans, including pension and global share ownership plans with employer matching contributions
  • Paid time off including holidays, vacation, personal, and sick days, along with statutory leaves of absence
  • Opportunities for professional growth, continuous learning, and career development
  • Flexible work arrangements supporting work-life balance
  • Inclusive and diverse work environment that fosters well-being and innovation
