About the Role

Motional is seeking a highly skilled Staff Front End Engineer to join its Web Visualization Tooling team. This pivotal role involves developing and maintaining critical web-based tooling and visualization systems that support machine learning engineers and other internal stakeholders. The successful candidate will play a key part in enhancing feedback loops, improving system performance, and ensuring the scalability and maintainability of our frontend ecosystem. You will be responsible for defining and driving best practices in web development, architecting modern frontend solutions using React, TypeScript, and Vue, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams including ML, UX, data services, and data annotation. The role requires a proactive approach to building mission-critical UI systems, designing complex workflows, and delivering high-quality, data-heavy visualizations. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, product-driven environment, demonstrating ownership, autonomy, and a passion for creating intuitive user experiences that empower our teams to innovate and succeed.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architecture
  • Experience with Vue.js
  • Strong understanding of UX principles and usability best practices
  • Ability to work independently with high ownership and initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal and mentorship skills
  • Experience designing and documenting technical solutions
  • Ability to collaborate directly with customers to identify needs and deliver solutions
  • Familiarity with backend systems such as Node.js and Python (bonus)
  • Experience in project management and operational agility (bonus)
  • Background in game development or 3D visualization (bonus)
  • Strong organizational skills and a quick learner

Responsibilities

  • Drive the adoption of cross-team standards and best practices for web development
  • Own and oversee collaboration efforts to ensure timely and effective delivery of projects
  • Architect and scale a modern frontend ecosystem leveraging React, TypeScript, and Vue.js
  • Collaborate with ML, UX, data services, and other teams to align tooling with real-world workflows
  • Develop mission-critical UI systems utilized by various internal stakeholders
  • Design and implement user experiences for complex, data-intensive workflows
  • Optimize frontend performance, scalability, and maintainability
  • Ship features rapidly and iterate based on user feedback in a product-driven environment
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical documentation and best practices
  • Work directly with customers and internal teams to identify needs and craft effective solutions
