Forward Deployed Engineer
About the role
We're looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer who thrives at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer success. You'll work directly with customers to solve complex technical problems while building the software that makes those solutions scalable.
This is a unique hybrid role. Roughly half your time will be spent working directly with customers, onboarding teams, supporting enterprise implementations, and partnering with Sales and Customer Success on technical engagements. The other half will be spent building software—shipping features, automating workflows, improving our platform, and owning engineering projects from design through deployment.
You'll become an expert in how customers use Numeral and use those insights to make the product better every week. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both solving technical problems with customers and writing production code.
What you'll do
- Partner with Sales and Customer Success on technical customer conversations, implementations, and onboarding.
- Debug customer issues across APIs, integrations, and production systems.
- Design and build product features, internal tooling, and automations that improve both customer experience and engineering velocity.
- Own engineering projects end-to-end, from gathering requirements through implementation and deployment.
- Work directly with customers to understand complex workflows and translate them into product improvements.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success to deliver exceptional customer outcomes.
- Help improve our APIs, integrations, developer experience, and operational tooling.
- Become a trusted technical advisor for some of our largest customers.
What you'll bring
- 2–5 years of software engineering experience.
- Strong programming skills in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js preferred), or experience in another backend language with a willingness to learn.
- Experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Comfort working directly with customers and explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ownership mindset—you enjoy taking projects from idea to production.
- Startup mentality: comfortable with ambiguity and excited to wear multiple hats.
- Experience building APIs or backend services.
- Familiarity with AWS, Docker, Redis, or modern cloud infrastructure.
- Experience working with SaaS integrations or enterprise customers.
- Background in fintech, accounting, payments, or tax technology.
- Experience working in an early-stage startup.
