About the Role
Provides nursing care to individuals who present to the Harris County Hospital District for treatment, evidence collection and injury documentation. Completes and documents physical, social and safety assessments on each patient. Interacts in a professional manner with the patient, family and members of the multidisciplinary team. Participates in education and implementing prevention strategies within the community. Testifies in courts of law as an expert witness. Is available to respond to locations within the Harris County Hospital District to care for victims and/or perpetrators of trauma, assault or abuse.
Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care for treatment, evidence collection, and injury documentation.
- Complete and document physical, social, and safety assessments for each patient.
- Interact professionally with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Participate in community education and prevention strategies.
- Testify in courts of law as an expert witness.
- Respond to locations within Harris County Hospital District to care for victims and/or perpetrators of trauma, assault, or abuse.
- Communicate effectively with law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, social service agencies, and medical examiner professionals.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
- Current State of Texas RN Licensure.
- Preferred certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) through either the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) or Texas Office of the Attorney General, or within two years of employment.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of healthcare experience as a Registered Nurse with a background in Emergency/Trauma, Labor & Delivery, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, and/or Forensic Nursing.
- Current knowledge and experience in forensic nursing and/or participation in SANE/SAFE programs.
Skills
- Above average verbal communication (heavy public contact).
- Exceptional verbal communication (e.g., public speaking).
- Writing/composing (correspondence/reports), including entry of forensic data and case reports.
- Analytical skills.
- Proficiency with medical terms, PC, research, and word processing.
Schedule
- Weekends, holidays, flexible hours, travel, and on-call accountability for Harris County Hospital District.
