About the role

Direct and supervise the planning, layout, installation of forms, rebar, embeds, and anchor bolts for installation of concrete structures in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the lead men and craft workers under your supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly, and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Perform all principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under your supervision.
• Lead and support all safety-related processes and programs; engage with your work team to achieve zero injuries.
• Understand and adhere to scheduling, material control, and unit man-hour performance reporting.
• Become familiar with the Field Progress Management System (FPMS).
• Create and execute a one-week schedule and set crew goals based on project unit rates.
• Review crew's timecards for correct hours and phase coding.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigations as needed.
• Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job safety planning.
• Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
• Ensure all crew members understand, participate in, and sign pre-job safety planning tools.
• Understand and respond to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens).
• Support and follow lockout/tagout procedures.
• Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions.
• Listen to suggestions, complaints, problems, and safety concerns; devise and implement action plans.
• Coordinate and communicate work with other crafts and co-workers.
• Manage other crafts as requested by project supervision.
• Provide on-the-job training to individuals under your supervision.
• Train employees on safety practices, policies, and procedures.
• Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out assigned work.
• Plan and communicate with supervisors to ensure adequate supply of tools, materials, and equipment.
• Understand the scope of work and related project parts.
• Develop a thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, and schedule.
• Conduct toolbox meetings and communicate safety concerns, work scope, plans, and schedules.
• Participate in quantity report collection as needed on a daily/weekly basis.
• Ensure employees produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Inspect subordinates' work for compliance with contract plans and specifications.
• Ensure correct construction procedures are followed during installation.
• Point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action.
• Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards or need for adjustments.
• Inspect field conditions, identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures; take corrective actions.
• Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order.
• Complete daily equipment inspections for equipment being used.
• Complete performance reviews of craft workers according to Craft Performance Assessment (CPA) Guidelines.
• Ensure subordinates are qualified to perform their work at their respective levels.

Requirements

• Previous experience as a Journeyman, with experience working as a Carpenter, Concrete Finisher, Rod Buster, or similar craft.
• Strong working knowledge of civil/concrete crafts.
• Experience in the erection of all types of concrete structures.
• Working knowledge of auto-level and transit for accurate layout and verification of finished grades.
• Fabrication and erection of forms with thorough knowledge of steel-framed forms (e.g., Symons).
• Fabrication and placement of rebar, including proper tying techniques.
• Placing, finishing, and sealing concrete.
• Set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity for crew members.
• Possess all necessary tools (see Industrial Carpenter tool list).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (e.g., criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a supervisor.
• One or more of the following certifications:
  • NCCER Concrete Finishing
  • NCCER Carpenter
  • NCCER Reinforcing Ironwork
  • NCCER Rigger
  • NCCER Scaffolding
  • NCCER Fundamentals of Crew Leadership
  • NCCER Project Supervision
  • NCCER Project Management

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
• Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment.
• This position is considered safety-sensitive.
