About the role

Direct and supervise the planning, lay-out, installation, testing and repair of all aspects of solar photovoltaic construction including electrical and civil components in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the craft workers under your supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Perform all principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under your supervision.
• Conduct toolbox meetings, implement safety measures, and communicate safety concerns, work scope, plans, and schedules to crews.
• Ensure daily STA (Safety Task Assignment) is completed prior to the start of work.
• Lead and support all safety-related processes and programs to achieve zero injuries.
• Engage with your work team to prioritize safety; no job is so important that safety will be compromised.
• Watch for hazards and report concerns to your supervisor or safety professional; use stop-work authority if needed.
• Monitor crews for heat-related injuries and stop work before heat stress sets in.
• Understand scheduling, material control, and unit man-hour performance reporting for a crew.
• Become familiar with the Field Reporting System.
• Create and execute a one-week schedule and set crew goals based on project unit rates.
• Complete timecards for correct hours and phase coding on a daily basis.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigations as needed.
• Review accidents and causes with employees; hold crews accountable for safe working behaviors and conditions.
• Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job safety planning.
• Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
• Ensure all crew members understand, participate in, and sign pre-job safety planning tools at the start and end of each shift.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions accurately.
• Listen to suggestions, complaints, problems, safety concerns, and recommendations; evaluate and implement action plans.
• Consult with supervisor and HR on any issues.
• Provide on-the-job training to individuals under your supervision.
• Understand site maps and identify work area locations.
• Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out assigned work.
• Plan and communicate with supervisor to ensure adequate supply of tools, materials, and equipment.
• Gain a complete understanding of the scope of work and related project parts.
• Develop a thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, and schedule as they relate to assigned work.
• Participate in quantity report collection as needed on a daily/weekly basis; ensure accuracy.
• Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications for assigned work.
• Understand, review, and execute job work packages for scheduled tasks.
• Ensure crew plans, lays out, diagrams, installs, and/or repairs in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Inspect subordinates' work for compliance with contract plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Ensure correct construction procedures are followed during installation.
• Point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action.
• Walk and inspect installations daily.
• Examine field conditions, identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures; take corrective actions.
• Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order; complete daily equipment inspections.
• Complete performance reviews of craft workers according to Craft Performance Assessment (CPA) Guidelines.
• Ensure subordinates are qualified to perform their work relative to their level.

Requirements

• Must have working experience as a Solar Technician with a strong knowledge of Solar Photovoltaic construction craft and the assembly, installation, or maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for ground or roof installation.
• Must set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity for crew members.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Solar Installer Tool List).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a supervisor.
• One or more of the following certifications:
  • NCCER Solar Photovoltaic Installer
  • NCCER Electrician
  • NCCER Concrete Finishing
  • NCCER Carpenter

Work Environment / Physical Demands

Physical Demands:

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 52 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas.
• See and hear naturally or with correction.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to procedure.
• Requires repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Requires extensive walking throughout the shift.
• Additional Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) may be required (e.g., Kevlar sleeves).

Work Environment:

• Typical construction site environment.
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures; exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
• Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment.
• Exposure to high places.
• This position is considered safety-sensitive.
