Food Service Worker/ Comet Kids Aide 2026-2027

Two combined part-time positions totaling 7.25 hours per day (36.25 hours weekly) for 165 days per year. During Summer, hours increase to 40 hours per week as a Comet Kids Aide at $26/hour.

Position Purpose

The Food Service Worker prepares and serves nutritious meals for school breakfasts and lunches, and maintains a safe and sanitary kitchen.

Food Service Responsibilities

  • Prepares breakfasts and lunches according to nutrition standards.
  • Serves meals in a timely manner and in the correct proportions.
  • Assists with the cleaning of trays, dishes, cooking pans, and utensils; takes care of recycling.
  • Assists in cleaning counters, salad bar, stove, and equipment.
  • Assists with ordering supplies.
  • Unpacks, rotates stock, inventories, and sorts grocery deliveries.
  • Follows Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP); takes temperature of all coolers/freezers.
  • Complies with food regulations in health plans and 504s.
  • Follows all federal and state requirements regarding food preparation.

Comet Kids Aide Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Comet Kids Supervisor, engages in lessons, games, and activities with the Comet Kids students to provide a caring and nurturing environment.
  • Assist Comet Kids Supervisor with activities: play, crafts, lessons, snacks, lunches, and games.
  • Monitor behavior of students for appropriateness and need for discipline; address safety and emergency needs.
  • Accompany students on outings, field trips, and special activities.
  • Assist students in getting to special activities.
  • Engage in one-to-one and group activities with children.
  • Relay children's special needs to the Supervisor.
  • Administer medication to students where applicable.
  • Recommend ideas, identify problems, and aid in problem-solving.
  • Give encouragement and praise for students' accomplishments to help build self-esteem.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Responsible for updating student records as needed.
  • Help to implement Comet Kids policies and procedures.
  • Report any equipment and supply concerns to the Comet Kids supervisor.
  • Support implementation of emergency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain student and staff emergency information as needed.

Requirements

  • High school degree, GED, or equivalent.
  • CPR certification.
  • First aid certification.
  • AED certification.
  • At least 2 years of child care experience (if no HS Diploma/GED).

Skills

  • Knowledge of care and use of kitchen equipment and appliances and proper sanitation methods.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Knowledge of the organizational and communication channels of KCS.

Pay

  • Food Service Worker: $17/hour (Mon-Fri, 10a-2p).
  • Comet Kids Aide: $26/hour (Mon-Fri, 2p-5:45p).

Schedule

  • 7.25 hours per day, 36.25 hours weekly for 165 days per year.
  • During Summer: 40 hours per week as a Comet Kids Aide.
