About the role

Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, mitigate, and prevent disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration/misbranding of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
  • Perform inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement activities in an assigned geographic or defined specialty work area.
  • Apply principles, practices, and objectives of environmental health programs; interpret and apply laws, regulations, and standards.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science.
  • One-and-one-half (1-1/2) years professional inspectional or investigational work experience involved in interpreting and applying public health laws, regulations, and standards.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.
  • Tact in enforcing and interpreting sanitation laws, rules, and regulations.

Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of sanitation sciences.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant regulations and laws.
  • Ability to apply principles and practices of environmental health programs.
