About the role

Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, mitigate, and prevent disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration/misbranding of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
  • Perform inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement activities in an assigned geographic or defined specialty work area.
  • Apply all phases of the sanitation sciences, understand socioeconomic conditions in the surveillance area, and use tact in enforcing and interpreting sanitation laws, rules, and regulations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in one of the physical or biological sciences.
  • One and one-half (1-1/2) years professional inspectional or investigational work experience involved in the interpretation and application of the laws, regulations in public health.

Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices, and objectives of environmental health programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of pertinent regulations and laws.
  • Thorough working knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.

Skills

  • Knowledge of sanitation sciences.
  • Ability to interpret and apply public health laws and regulations.
  • Tact and diplomacy in enforcing sanitation laws and regulations.

Pay

$5,107 to $6,221 per month (SR-20, Step D to I), effective July 1, 2026.
