Fleet Technician (B)

First Student is hiring immediately for a Mechanic / Maintenance Technician II to join our team dedicated to safely transporting students in those iconic yellow buses. In this role, you'll play a critical part in keeping our fleet road-ready and dependable—supporting a safer ride for the children in our community.

About the Role

As a Technician at First Student, your day-to-day work ensures our vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers. You'll complete both routine and advanced repairs, handle emergency service calls, and work under moderate supervision. You may also provide mentorship to entry-level technicians.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles including:
  • Brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions
  • Electrical components, fluid systems, filters, belts, batteries, and hoses
• Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and diagnostic troubleshooting
• Maintain detailed service records, complete accurate work orders, and track parts usage
• Support emergency roadside service calls when needed
• Clean vehicles and maintain the shop environment
• Safely move vehicles around the yard or between work areas
• Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
• Other duties as assigned by management

Requirements

• Have 3+ years of experience working with diesel, gas, electric, or CNG vehicles
• Are comfortable using hand tools and diagnostics software
• Are a strong problem solver who thrives both independently and on a team
• Have a valid driver's license and are willing to obtain a CDL (we'll help with training!)
• Have or are willing to build a personal mechanic tool set
• Are eager to grow your skills through ASE testing (we'll support you every step of the way!)

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Vocational or technical training in vehicle repair
• Class B CDL with passenger endorsement (or ability to obtain within 3 months)
• ASE Certifications (preferred, with requirement to begin ASE testing within 1 year)
• Experience performing DOT inspections and vehicle safety assessments
• Military experience, prior fleet maintenance, or previous bus/large vehicle repair

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, grease, and various weather exposure
• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs and work in crouched or prone positions beneath vehicles

This is a safety-sensitive position and subject to DOT drug testing, including cannabis.

Pay

• $25.00/hour
• ASE incentive of $0.25/hour for each relevant ASE obtained (We pay for study materials and exams!)
