Flatiron Research Fellow, Center for Computational Mathematics
About the role
The Flatiron Institute advances scientific research through computational methods, including data analysis, theory, modeling, and simulation. The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCM) comprises roughly 50 members spanning recent Ph.D.s to senior scientists, software engineers, support staff, and visitors, fostering an unusually interdisciplinary environment. CCM’s mission is to develop the next generation of simulation and analysis methods and make them available to the community via collaboration and software development. Fellows are appointed for an initial two‑year term, renewable for a third year contingent on performance, and are based at the Simons Foundation’s offices in New York City (onsite with one day per week remote work permitted). Fellows receive mentorship from one or more CCM research scientists, are encouraged to pursue an independent research program, collaborate across the Flatiron Institute’s centers and Simons Foundation initiatives, participate in seminars, tutorials, workshops, and conferences, and mentor students through the summer internship program. They are expected to disseminate results through scientific publications, conferences/seminars, and possibly open‑source software. Some FRF positions may be joint with other institute centers (astrophysics, biology, quantum physics, neuroscience, catalysis); applicants interested in such joint appointments should note this in their research statement.
Responsibilities
- Carry out an independent research program in one of CCM’s active areas (numerical analysis, machine learning, statistical methodology, computational biophysics and imaging, high performance computing/open source software).
- Collaborate across the various Flatiron Institute centers and/or Simons Foundation initiatives.
- Participate in the institute’s and center’s vibrant activities such as seminars, tutorials, workshops, and conferences.
