FIT NYC Full-Time Faculty Position in Writing Studies, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences

About the role

The English and Communication Studies Department seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member in Writing Studies with a focus on Business and Professional Writing, first-year composition pedagogy, and expertise in AI and writing, critical AI literacy, machine writing, or related digital rhetorics and pedagogies. The successful candidate will teach first-year and third-year writing courses, develop specialized writing and rhetoric courses, provide leadership for the department’s composition and professional writing offerings, and participate in administrative duties, including rotating into the role of Writing Program Coordinator.

Candidates should coordinate with the English Language and Literacy program to support culturally and linguistically diverse students and collaborate with The Writing and Speaking Studio to develop student-centric programming and professional development. Interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to FIT’s emphasis on diversity, globalization, and experiential learning are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Teach existing first-year and third-year writing courses and develop new writing and rhetoric courses aligned with specialization.
• Provide intellectual and pedagogical leadership for the department’s first-year composition and third-year professional/research-based writing programs.
• Participate in administrative duties, including rotating into the role of Writing Program Coordinator.
• Coordinate with the English Language and Literacy program to support students requiring developmental/language assistance.
• Collaborate with The Writing and Speaking Studio to develop student-centric programming and faculty professional development.
• Integrate AI and digital writing technologies into curriculum design, addressing their rhetorical and compositional implications.
• Design engaging curricula utilizing emerging technologies and instructional delivery methods.
• Foster critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in diverse classroom environments.
• Maintain active participation in professional scholarship, mentorship, and representation of FIT at local, regional, national, and international organizations.
• Support FIT’s mission of sustainability, pluralism, and diversity through writing studies.
• Utilize innovative instructional technology and social/emerging media to enhance student learning and interaction.

Requirements

• PhD in Writing Studies, Composition and Rhetoric, or a closely related field (ABDs considered with dissertation defense required prior to the second semester).
• Record of academic research, publication, professional activities, and successful college-level teaching.
• Familiarity with online and hybrid learning environments.

Qualifications

• Research and teaching experience in AI and writing, critical AI literacy, machine writing, or related digital rhetorics and pedagogies.
• Dedication to teaching Business and Professional Writing and its development.
• Experience developing critical thinking through written and oral communication, particularly regarding AI’s impact on writing.
• Background or interest in writing program administration, pedagogical innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Commitment to working with a diverse student population and fostering inclusive learning environments.
• Experience or expertise in directing writing programs or spearheading faculty/student initiatives.

Pay

Salary is based on education level and cumulative experience, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Salary Schedules (pgs. 73-74):

• Instructor: $69,346.37 – $80,793.82
• Assistant Professor: $80,736.40 – $118,984.88
• Associate Professor: $94,498.31 – $142,271.78
• Professor: $115,232.32 – $173,403.37
