FIT NYC Adjunct Faculty Pool - Fine Arts, Painting and Drawing

FIT, an internationally renowned college of art and design, business, and technology within the State University of New York, seeks part-time adjunct faculty for the Fine Arts Department in the School of Art and Design. The college offers a unique blend of hands-on experience, classroom study, and liberal arts, with over 45 majors granting AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees. The School of Art and Design provides 17-degree programs, fostering creativity, technical potential, and global awareness in fields such as fashion, visual communication, toy design, and visual presentation and exhibition design.

About the role

The Fine Arts department is recruiting adjunct faculty to teach courses in Painting and Drawing. Successful candidates will share extensive knowledge of art history and contemporary practices, with a preference for cross-cultural curriculum development. The role emphasizes inclusive teaching methods that respect diversity in learning differences, race, ethnicity, gender expression, sexuality, physical ability, socioeconomic status, and immigration status. Expertise in 2D mediums of painting and drawing is required, with specific skill sets determined by individual course needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance, input, and assistance to students on painting and drawing projects.
• Encourage creativity and critical thinking in a supportive learning environment.
• Submit grades for assignments, projects, and coursework promptly and accurately.
• Maintain attendance records and organized documentation of student performance and progress.
• Fulfill administrative responsibilities, including office hours and participation in department meetings and committees.
• Ensure a safe learning environment, including proper use of artists' materials and equipment.
• Deliver relevant course material, assess student performance, and provide guidance both in and out of the classroom.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (minimum qualification).
• Six years of relevant industry experience or equivalent.

Qualifications

• Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent (preferred).
• At least one year of teaching experience at the college level (preferred).
• Comprehensive expertise in painting and drawing concepts, processes, and materials.
• Ability to teach structural form beyond image-making, including safe use of tools and studio equipment.
• Strong understanding of historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts in contemporary painting and drawing practices.
• Ability to write a syllabus, deliver course materials, assess student performance, and submit grades in a timely manner.
• Effective communication and collaboration with classroom technicians.

Skills

Required skill sets may include, but are not limited to:

• Knowledge of two-dimensional design concepts and techniques in drawing and painting, with the ability to teach foundational 2D principles.
• Ability to teach structural drawing from direct observation (not photo-sourced) for foundation-level courses.
• Proficiency in oil painting fundamentals, including color mixing, paint application, and compositional strategies from direct observation.
• Working knowledge of drawing the human figure, including use of color, materials experimentation, and exploration of scale and composition.
• Ability to teach sustained drawing using mixed media and complex relationships between figure and space.
• Ability to guide students in synthesizing observation, invention, abstraction, and process-based approaches.
• Contemporary approach to painting/drawing, assisting students in developing concept and form.

Schedule

This is a part-time adjunct teaching position beginning in Spring 2026. The department will maintain a pool of candidates for potential future assignments and will contact applicants whose qualifications align with programmatic needs.

Pay

Compensation is governed by the UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The base rate is $89.98 per hour, based on minimum qualifications. Final rate, step, and appointment rank are determined by demonstrated qualifications and experience, in accordance with the CBA Adjunct Salary Schedules.
