FIRST ASSISTANT PROSECUTING ATTORNEY – Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office

Under the supervision of a Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, the Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney or Prosecuting Attorney, represents the Prosecutor’s Office in family support matters.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and monitors the activities of legal assistants, paralegals, and the investigator.
  • Conducts intake interviews with custodial parents or parties to determine whether a paternity and/or child support case should be filed.
  • Conducts interviews with custodial and non-custodial parents to establish paternity or child support orders.
  • Obtains information necessary to determine a fair and appropriate level of child support.
  • Consults various computer programs to locate non-custodial parents.
  • Performs data entry across various computer programs, including the Michigan Child Support Enforcement System and MiSupport (Business Objects, VERA, Electronic Document Exchange, Federal Child Support Portal).
  • Attends and presents evidence in formal hearings on paternity and child support issues, including possible trial work.
  • Handles interstate cases by initiating requests to other states and responding to requests to pursue paternity and/or child support.
  • Corresponds with other state tribunals and out-of-state stakeholders.
  • Completes fingerprinting/background investigations as directed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
  • Conducts legal research and answers questions from non-attorney staff about law, procedure, and policy.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public, custodial parties, non-custodial parties, court staff, and MDHHS employees regarding case disposition or status.
  • Drafts complaints, motions, affidavits, and orders; reviews and signs documents prepared by legal assistants and paralegals.
  • Familiarity with the collection of DNA samples for genetic testing in paternity cases.
  • Enters data into multiple computer systems; scans and indexes documents.
  • Stays abreast of changes in relevant federal and state statutes, regulations, court rules, case law, and policies.
  • Participates in PAAM Family Support Forum and other trainings, meetings, and conferences.
  • Satisfies contractual obligations with the Office of Child Support as articulated in the Cooperative Reimbursement Program.
  • Attends County Board of Commissioners meetings periodically to seek approval of the budget for the Cooperative Reimbursement Program.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor Degree and a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan.
  • Two (2) years of experience as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, or equivalent, or practicing Family Law attorney.
  • Demonstrated organizational and/or supervisory abilities as determined by the Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Member of the State Bar of Michigan for at least two (2) years.
  • Two (2) years of experience with the Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office or two (2) years of equivalent trial experience or civil litigation in another capacity (e.g., U.S. Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, Friend of the Court attorney, or Family Law Attorney).
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the functions of an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney or Family Law Attorney as determined by the Prosecuting Attorney.

Physical Demands

  • Sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.

Background Check

Pursuant to MCL 15.651 – 15.654, all IV-D staff will be subjected to a fingerprint-based criminal history check. Additional satisfactory background check may be requested by a partnering agency.

Pay

$102,792.00 – $154,342.00 yearly
