About the role

The Burns Harbor Shift Lieutenant will supervise Contractor Security and Emergency Response Officers on a 21-turn basis at ArcelorMittal USA Inc. (Burns Harbor, IN). In the absence of the Captain, the Lieutenant will act as Incident Commander for emergencies, including HAZMAT incidents, and oversee the plant security program, emergency response activities, and fire prevention/suppression duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Contractor security personnel and the plant security program, including:
    • Personnel pass clearance and issuance
    • Mobile and foot patrol
    • Access control for employees, non-employees, and vehicles
    • Control of materials entering/leaving the property
    • Enforcement of Plant Employee/Non-Employee Rules and Regulations, Traffic Safety Program, and Homeland Security Facility Security Plan
    • Investigation of vehicle accidents, thefts, loss-related incidents, and other abnormal conditions
    • Completion of accident/security reports, logs, and related tasks
  • In the absence of the Captain, supervise Contractor Emergency Response Officers and respond to:
    • Hazardous material incidents
    • Rescue situations (confined space, high angle, water-related, vehicle/equipment entrapment)
    • Fire prevention and suppression activities for structures/buildings on plant property
  • Acquire working knowledge of fire detection, suppression, and transmission systems, including operation, deactivation, support, and restoration.
  • Supervise Emergency Response Officers in fire maintenance duties, including:
    • Pickup, refilling, servicing, delivery, and testing of plant fire extinguishers
    • Inspections and recharging of CO2 cartridges for Ansul fire extinguishers
    • Fire alarm system testing
    • Hydrant testing
    • Fire department connection inspections
    • Hose reel inspections
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Account Manager, Captain, or ArcelorMittal Security Manager.
  • Provide customer service by carrying out safety/security procedures and emergency response activities.
  • Respond to incidents and critical situations calmly and problem-solve effectively.
  • Conduct regular and random patrols around the business and perimeter.

Requirements

  • Current certification as Firefighter II (State of Indiana).
  • Certification at the Hazmat Operations Level.
  • Qualified in confined space and high angle rescue operations.
  • Current EMT or EMR certification.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Verifiable training in Incident Command and/or the National Incident Command System (N.I.M.S.).
  • Ability to pass screening for a Transportation Worker Identification Card.
  • If not already certified, willingness to complete First Responder training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18+ years of age with a valid driver’s license (for driving positions).
  • Must pass a background investigation and post-offer/pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  • Maintain active status of all required licenses and carry them while on duty.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills for wireless technology at client sites.

Physical and Mental Functions

  • Stand or walk constantly (up to an entire shift) on various surfaces (tile, concrete, carpet).
  • Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift.
  • Occasionally bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform duties.
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Run as needed.
  • Constant use of hands/arms for reaching, handling, grasping, and fingering (e.g., phone, notepad, reports).
  • Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level) for observation, reading, and interaction with public/co-workers.
  • Work in various environments, including adverse outdoor conditions (cold, rain, heat).
  • Constant mental alertness and attention to detail for setting priorities and following up on assignments.

Pay

$24.35 per hour.

Schedule

24/48 Kelly Schedule.
