Requirements

  • Submit a complete application, including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
  • Currently hold the permanent rank of Firefighter in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire as of August 10, 2026.
  • Presently employed by the City of Pittsburgh and remain continuously employed until time of appointment.
  • Hold a current, valid Class A, B, or C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License at the time of filing application, which must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Maintain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification throughout employment.

The City of Pittsburgh conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates, including criminal background, driver's license verification, and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments. Candidates may be disqualified based on the results of this investigation.

Civil Service Examination

  • Written examination based on the knowledge and abilities listed in the position description, valued at 100 percent. Exam date: November 4, 2026.
  • Candidates scoring 75 or higher receive an additional ½ point for each full year of service in the Bureau of Fire, up to a maximum of 10 points.
  • Candidates will be ranked on the Eligibility List based on final exam score, including service credit. Ties are broken by lottery.
  • Only candidates with at least two years of service as a Firefighter by the certification date will be certified for promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the activities of assigned personnel and ensures the safety of Firefighters.
  • Assumes command at fire scenes until relieved by a senior officer.
  • Responds to emergency calls (e.g., structural fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical calls) to extinguish fires, save lives, and perform rescue operations.
  • Ensures compliance with all City and departmental safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Operates and directs the use of fire hoses, nozzles, and equipment to protect exposures, confine fires, and apply extinguishing agents.
  • Drives, operates, and maintains Bureau vehicles (e.g., pumper engine, aerial ladder, support vehicles).
  • Extinguishes fires, overhauls fire areas, ventilates gases and smoke, and salvages property in accordance with established policies.
  • Inspects districts as part of fire prevention programs to ensure proper working condition of fire alarm systems, hydrants, sprinkler systems, and to identify code violations.
  • Works all shifts and participates in scheduled drills and exercises to maintain proficiency in equipment use and operating procedures.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and performs routine housekeeping and maintenance at the fire station.
  • Participates in public relations and education activities.
  • May act as a Fire Captain in their absence.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Pay

$92,995 per year.
