Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician

About the role

This position involves direct firefighting, emergency care, hazardous materials handling, and fire prevention activities. The employee primarily reports to a Fire/EMS Lieutenant, but may report to the incident commander during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Engages in firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose, and extinguishing fires.
• Provides emergency aid such as administering basic and advanced life support.
• Participates in fire drills and attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
• Receives and relays fire calls and alarms, operates radio and communication equipment.
• Inspects buildings, hydrants, and other structures for fire prevention.
• Maintains fire/EMS equipment, apparatus, and facilities; performs general maintenance work.
• Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, and training programs.
• Presents programs on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics to the community.
• Performs salvage operations and assists in firefighting efforts.
• Maintains contact with the general public, department officers, and other city officials.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. Coursework in fire science or medical studies. College or university coursework in medical studies, business, health administration, public administration, or related fields. Must have a valid Class B Non-commercial driver’s license, a Kansas EMT license, and CPR certification.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of fire suppression and prevention, emergency medical services, building, electrical, mechanical, and fire codes. Knowledge of inspection techniques. Thorough knowledge of Arkansas City geography. Ability to operate firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, and fire prevention equipment. Ability to perform strenuous physical exertion for prolonged periods. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Knowledge of NFPA incident command system. Skills

Knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Basic and advanced life support techniques as demonstrated through Kansas EMT certification. Building, electrical, mechanical, and fire codes. Inspection techniques. Arkansas City geography. Annual out-of-pocket maximum applies after the deductible/coinsurance is met. Employee cost varies based on the chosen option.

The schedule for this position is typically day and night shifts, with occasional overtime required.
