Firefighter (Basic Life Support / Hazardous Materials Technician).

About the role

Performs firefighting and rescue operations. Assigned to a crew engaged in all-hazards response functions. Performs emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS). Drives and operates firefighting/rescue vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

• Conditions of employment: Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Required to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. Position meets criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. Subject to pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations. Subject to pre-employment screening, random testing, and testing based on reasonable suspicion and involvement in an on-duty accident. Designated as Mission Essential. Required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. Designated as Key position, exempt from recall to active duty, and trained to ensure mission accomplishment during mobilization. Requires shift work, 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period. Requires a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. Must participate in department's wellness program and complete annual emergency vehicle operations course. Must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations. Requires a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. Designated as Emergency-Essential which takes precedence over any transportation agreement or military recall status.
• Qualifications: US Citizens. GS-04: One year of specialized experience which includes performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade, controlling hazardous materials incidents, and driving and operating firefighting apparatus and equipment. GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and equipment, operating as a member of a hazardous material response team, performing aircraft rescue and firefighting operations, and performing emergency medical care at the EMT level. GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and equipment, operating as a member of a hazardous material response team at the technician level, performing aircraft rescue and firefighting operations, performing emergency medical care at the EMT level, and obtaining certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or The Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board).
