About the role
The Fire Suppression Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, service, and repair of fire extinguishers, emergency exit lights, and pre-engineered suppression systems—including associated detection and control systems—with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Use required tools and test equipment (power machines, groovers, cutters, band saws, lifts, etc.) to repair or replace fire extinguishers, pre-engineered systems, and detection & control system components.
- Maintain comprehensive working knowledge of NFPA codes, standards, and systems, including all types of fire extinguishers, pre-engineered suppression systems, and detection & control systems.
- Troubleshoot and identify defective components of pre-engineered suppression systems.
- Repair or replace damaged components of pre-engineered suppression systems, fire extinguishers, and detection & control systems.
- Communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
- Be punctual to required work locations and complete scheduled projects in a timely manner.
- Use Field Service Lightning to track work orders, materials needed, time on job, and complete documentation.
- Follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication program, policies, and procedures; participate in weekly Toolbox talks.
- Know the location of all related safety documentation on each project.
- Maintain company-provided vehicle in clean and well-maintained condition as required by company policies.
- Periodically attend seminars or training sessions to stay current with technology, codes, and standards changes.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- State or other required certification (preferred).
- 2+ years of experience in the Fire Life Safety industry, specifically within Fire Suppression.
- 2+ years of professional computer skills.
- Ability to effectively read, write, and communicate in English with employees and customers.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, including customer-specific requirements.
- Ability to travel 90% of the time.
Physical & Work Environment
- Frequently bend, ascend/descend step stools, ladders, and stairs; kneel; lift up to 50 lbs; reach above and below shoulders; stand and walk for extended periods.
- Occasionally balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift over 50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.
- Must be able to see in color, at close and far distances, with peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly work outside and be exposed to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise.
- Occasionally work indoors in an office setting, alone, or with others.
- Consistently wear all appropriate personal protective equipment as required by company safety policies.
