Fire Protection Inspector.

About the Role

This is an obligated, term appointment not to exceed 2 years, with possible extensions. The position is designated as Mission Essential, requiring the incumbent to report to work during severe weather or emergencies. The role includes shift work, covering evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations, with a schedule of four 9-hour days and one 24-hour shift per pay period (120 hours total). The position may also require planned and unscheduled overtime, as well as mutual aid support to local fire departments.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive inspections of buildings, high-hazard facilities, and operations to ensure compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, Army regulations, and local procedures.
• Review architectural drawings, specifications, and project plans for new construction and facility alterations to evaluate fire protection and life safety features.
• Develop, coordinate, and conduct fire safety education, prevention training courses, and evacuation drills for military personnel, civilian employees, schools, and specialized facility staff.
• Identify and develop mitigation plans for hazards involving specialized equipment, flammable materials, explosives, and complex electronic systems, utilizing advanced or innovative hazard isolation methods.
• Respond to hazardous incidents and emergencies under the Incident Command System, performing operational firefighting duties, apparatus maintenance, and basic medical care as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) during assigned shifts.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
• Ability to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs, including pre-employment and random drug testing.
• Use of personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
• Wear of prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
• Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
• Conformance to requirements set forth in NFPA 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
• Participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Direct Deposit of Pay is required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:

• Implementing fire protection and prevention strategies or programs.
• Providing training to personnel in fire protection and prevention.
• Detecting, reducing, and/or eliminating potential fire hazards.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the first lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). No substitution of education for experience is permitted for this position.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience, you must possess and maintain the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certifications, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M:

• Fire Inspector I & II
• Fire Instructor I
• Hazardous Material Operations
• Firefighter I & II
• Firefighting and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic or higher) certification from the state of New York or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

Copies of all required certificates must be attached to your application package.

Pay

Estimated annual pay range based on a 60-hour workweek is $94,800–$123,276. Salary is based on a 120-hour work schedule per pay period. This position includes locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Advanced in-hire and salary negotiations for new Federal employees may be authorized.
