Fire Protection Inspector.

About the Role

Serve as a Fire Protection Inspector at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a large installation with a high degree of fire severity and expectancy.

Responsibilities

• Perform weekly fire inspections of areas with high fire expectancy, including high hazard facilities such as shops, warehouses, offices, living quarters, medical facilities, labs, airfields, and computer labs where flammable/combustible materials are stored or used, or where hazardous operations are conducted.
• Conduct education programs on fire prevention, detection, and suppression for the local and installation community, targeting audiences ranging from adults to school-age children.
• Inspect fire extinguishers and alarm systems for proper operation, adequacy, and compliance.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
• Ability to lift up to 45 lbs. regularly.
• Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
• Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work during severe weather or emergencies.
• Required to wear a uniform and/or appropriate safety apparel while on duty.
• Shift work required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis, with a work schedule of 120 hours per pay period (24-hour shifts).
• Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License to operate vehicles.
• Successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
• Participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
• Work a 60-hour work week/120 hours per pay period; may require overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Maintain a functioning telephone at your residence for emergency recall situations.
• Obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance; a background investigation and credit check are required.
• Subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met requirements in 5 CFR Part 11.
• U.S. Citizenship required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Specialized Experience for GS-07:

• One year of specialized experience including:
  • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized fire department.
  • Assisting with providing training in fire protection and prevention.
  • Participating in conducting inspections of facilities/buildings and alarm, detection, and suppression systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06).

Specialized Experience for GS-08:

• One year of specialized experience including:
  • Conducting fire/safety inspections to identify, reduce, or eliminate fire hazards.
  • Assisting with conducting and providing education programs on fire prevention and detection to other firefighters and/or the community.
  • Reviewing plans for new construction, alterations, or modifications to buildings/structures to ensure compliance with fire codes and prevention practices.

Selective Placement Factors:

In addition to the above requirements, this position requires the following certifications issued by the Department of Defense (DOD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/Pro-Board. Certifications must be attached with your application.

For GS-07:

• Fire Inspector I (or an accredited First Responder Inspector certification IAW Chapter 7 of NFPA Standard 1030, 2024 Edition).
• Fire Instructor I.
• HAZMAT Operations.
• Fire Inspector II (must obtain within 12 months from date of entry into DoD fire service).
• Fire Life and Safety Educator (FLSE) (must obtain within 12 months from date of entry into DoD fire service).

For GS-08:

• Fire Officer I.
• Fire Inspector II (or an accredited First Responder Inspector certification IAW Chapter 7 of NFPA Standard 1030, 2024 Edition).
• Fire Instructor I.
• HAZMAT Operations.
• Airport Firefighter.
• Fire Life and Safety Educator (FLSE).
• Emergency Medical Technician (current State or National Registry).

Age Requirements

• Maximum Entry Age (MEA): 37 for Firefighters. Must be hired by the last day of the month you reach 37.
• Maximum Reentry Age: If previously served in a covered position, may be rehired past the MEA if able to complete 20 years of covered service by mandatory retirement age (57 for firefighters).
