About the Role

This position is part of the Installations Career Field and involves ensuring fire safety and prevention across an assigned installation. The role requires conducting inspections, investigations, plan reviews, and educational programs to maintain and enhance fire and life safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review monthly fire inspection reports submitted by firefighters and/or area/building fire marshals.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings and facilities throughout the installation to identify and eliminate fire hazards.
  • Investigate new and unusual work and living situations to detect and mitigate fire risks.
  • Conduct plan reviews for new construction and renovations to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations.
  • Develop, deliver, and conduct fire and life safety education programs to promote client involvement in fire prevention, detection, suppression, and evacuation.
  • Implement an information program to secure client participation in fire prevention, detection, and suppression efforts.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
  • Completion of pre-employment and periodic medical examinations to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as part of regular duties.
  • Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies.
  • Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License to operate vehicles.
  • Successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Work schedule of 120 hours per pay period (60 hours per week); may require overtime during emergencies.
  • Subject to periodic medical examinations to determine continued fitness for duty.
  • Must report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief.
  • Maintain a functioning telephone at residence for recall situations.
  • Appointment is subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met under 5 CFR Part 315.

Qualifications

This position is open to U.S. citizens and is included under Special Retirement Coverage (SRC), which may include a maximum entry age and mandatory retirement date.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level, including:

  • Assisting in performing fire inspections to detect and eliminate potential fire hazards.
  • Assisting in developing and implementing training in fire protection and prevention.
  • Assisting in reviewing construction plans to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations.

Certifications

In addition to meeting experience requirements, applicants must possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, IFSAC, or PRO-Board, and a State or National Registry EMT Certification (when applicable):

  • Fire Inspector I and II
  • Fire Instructor I
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • Firefighter I & II
  • Hazmat Operations
