Fire Captain - Health & Safety Officer

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Discover innovative solutions for present-day challenges.
  • Align daily operations with the City's future planning objectives.
  • Work with the Administrative Captain to identify, manage, and refine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Assist in managing the cancer prevention program.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate health and wellness programs.
  • Cookordination exposure reporting for fire operations and EMS incidents.
  • Manage shift coordination for peer support, CISM, and wellness needs with the Organizational Health Officer.
  • Work with Risk Management on the analysis and mitigation of workplace injuries.
  • Conduct investigations of accidents/injuries in cooperation with Battalion Chiefs and employees involved in the event.
  • Contribute to the department's strategic planning.
  • Address shift fleet and facility safety issues and coordinate with the administrative logistics section.
  • Assists in developing and delivering safety training topics.
  • Collaborate across City departments for enhanced data collection and analysis.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on return-to-work documentation and process.
  • Execute projects aligning with the Fire Department's objectives.
  • Review and develop recommendations for department policies and programs pertaining to health and safety.
  • Strengthening interdepartmental relationships.
  • Produce reports as directed by the Chief Staff.
  • Coordinate the building preplan process to ensure all commercial buildings are captured in CAD.
  • Liaison with Colleges and Universities conducting research in the health and wellness of firefighters, specifically cancer mitigation.
  • Liaison with Occupational Health Provider for annual physical, exposure care, and return to work physicals.
  • Create and administer exposure reporting and follow-up.
  • Handle additional assigned duties.

Minimum And Preferred Entrance Qualifications

  • Three (3) years consecutive sworn service in the Phoenix Regional Automatic Aid System at the rank of Captain.
  • Service with the Maricopa Fire/Medical Department is preferred.
  • Fire Department Incident Safety Officer Certification within 12 months of accepting the position.
  • A y equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, Which Provides The Requisite Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities For this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the Fire Chief and city management.
