About the Organization
Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) is a statewide nonprofit organization with a mission to end Veteran homelessness in Minnesota. Each year, MACV serves thousands of Veterans experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The organization provides comprehensive programs in housing, employment, legal, and other wrap-around services to support Veterans and their families throughout Minnesota. MACV operates with a budget of over $15 million annually and has a team of approximately 120 employees across the state.
About the Role
This position manages and supports MACV’s Financial Stability Program. Responsibilities include leading a small team of Financial Navigation Specialists, collaborating with contracted representative payee providers, conducting financial literacy training, developing partnerships with financial resource agencies, and integrating the Financial Stability Program into MACV’s daily operations. The role also involves direct work with Veterans to assist with budget development, debt repayment or consolidation, credit management, and establishing bank accounts.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all components of the Financial Stability Program, including staff and contractor management.
- Support and train staff to provide quality financial counseling services from a harm-reduction, strengths-based perspective.
- Maintain a close working relationship with MACV’s contracted Representative Payee agencies.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures among internal programs and external partners to maximize program impact.
- Cultivate relationships with financial management institutions to expand resources related to debt consolidation, debt forgiveness, tax filing, and traditional banking.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to create housing opportunities for Veterans.
- Provide ongoing training to internal staff and external partners on budgeting, debt consolidation, and available resources.
- Guide organizational staff in understanding Veterans' spending and mitigating inappropriate spending.
- Review all Financial Stability cases to ensure accuracy, compliance, quality service delivery, and follow-up.
- Manage internal and external referrals, ensuring quality referrals and maintaining realistic expectations for Veterans.
- Ensure programmatic consistency when working with Veterans in Greater Minnesota.
- Assist in grant reporting and funding acquisition, as needed.
- Directly provide financial counseling services to Veterans, including:
- Developing financial plans and budgets with Veterans to determine short- and long-term goals.
- Conducting case conferencing with Housing Stability Case Managers regarding Veterans' progress.
- Conducting ongoing evaluations of participants' progress and adjusting plans as needed.
- Providing financial literacy and counseling from a harm-reduction, strength-based perspective.
- Analyzing financial information to determine strategies for meeting clients' financial objectives.
- Reviewing Veterans' credit scores and determining strategies for improvement.
- Assisting Veterans with opening checking or savings bank accounts.
- Providing resources to increase client income or reduce spending.
- Developing discharge plans addressing financial ability to maintain permanent housing stability.
- Guiding clients in gathering documentation such as bank statements, credit reports, and tax returns.
- Coaching individuals virtually, by phone, or in-person.
Requirements
- Knowledge of credit issues, budgeting, and financial counseling.
- Experience with entering and managing information in a comprehensive database system.
- Working knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques.
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills for working with clients and creditors.
- Knowledge of credit scores and credit repair.
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with strict attention to detail.
- Experience working with individuals who are homeless, chemically dependent, or have mental health concerns.
- Ability to work well on a team but function independently.
- Knowledge of Veteran resources and the challenges of homelessness.
- Experience with client tracking systems and database management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Familiarity with VA benefits, Social Security, SOAR, and other public benefits.

$66,000–$72,000 annually.
