Job Summary
Gritman Medical Center is seeking a Financial Counselor to assist uninsured and underinsured patients with their reimbursement issues.Responsibilities
- Screen and enroll patients in financial assistance programs, including Medicaid and other scholarship programs.
- Aid in financial assistance applications and process approvals or denials promptly.
- Collaborate with Case Managers to maximize funding opportunities for patients.
- Provide explanations of billing statements, insurance benefits, and financial terms.
- Respond to patient inquiries and complaints, ensuring timely resolutions.
- Communicate payment options and arrange payment plans per hospital guidelines.
- Process daily paperwork, document patient interactions, and maintain confidentiality.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings and organizational training.
- Support collections by collecting outstanding payments and making collection calls on past-due accounts.
- Provide requested information to legal teams and collection agencies as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills.
- Broad knowledge of governmental assistance programs and application processes.
- Familiarity with statutes and regulations impacting patient financial discussions (e.g., 501(r)).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to translate complex medical and administrative language into patient-friendly terms.
- High attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Associate degree in healthcare administration or equivalent college coursework preferred.
- Experience in financial counseling, eligibility screening, or Medicaid application processing preferred.
- Community outreach experience is a plus.
