Financial Counselor | Full time | On-Site

Job Summary

Gritman Medical Center is seeking a Financial Counselor to assist uninsured and underinsured patients with their reimbursement issues.

Responsibilities

• Screen and enroll patients in financial assistance programs, including Medicaid and other scholarship programs.
• Aid in financial assistance applications and process approvals or denials promptly.
• Collaborate with Case Managers to maximize funding opportunities for patients.
• Provide explanations of billing statements, insurance benefits, and financial terms.
• Respond to patient inquiries and complaints, ensuring timely resolutions.
• Communicate payment options and arrange payment plans per hospital guidelines.
• Process daily paperwork, document patient interactions, and maintain confidentiality.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations.
• Attend and contribute to team meetings and organizational training.
• Support collections by collecting outstanding payments and making collection calls on past-due accounts.
• Provide requested information to legal teams and collection agencies as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of relevant experience demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills.
• Broad knowledge of governmental assistance programs and application processes.
• Familiarity with statutes and regulations impacting patient financial discussions (e.g., 501(r)).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to translate complex medical and administrative language into patient-friendly terms.
• High attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Associate degree in healthcare administration or equivalent college coursework preferred.
• Experience in financial counseling, eligibility screening, or Medicaid application processing preferred.
• Community outreach experience is a plus.

Physical Demands

Frequent computer use (up to 90% of the day). Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs. Limited standing, stooping, and carrying of light materials. Primarily indoor work with minimal risk of exposure to biohazardous materials.
