About the role
The Financial Assistance Specialist reviews and processes all financial assistance applications for St. Charles Health System according to established program guidelines. This role does not directly manage other caregivers.
Responsibilities
- Provide patients with financial assistance applications, track and process all documentation required to evaluate patients for assistance programs.
- Process financial assistance applications in alignment with all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Manage financial assistance application processing within regulated timelines, including applying account holds and vendor activities such as temporary holds from collection activities or account recalls.
- Follow up with patients regarding incomplete financial documentation to finalize the financial application process.
- Complete presumptive financial assistance screenings in alignment with all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Answer customer service inquiries from patients and other departments received via mail, phone, and email.
- Review and work reports and queues while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
- Post applicable financial assistance adjustments in SBO health information systems following detailed review of account balances, coverage eligibility, financial assistance exclusions, and applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Update and maintain federal poverty guideline information and other regulatory requirements that impact policy or internal application processing procedures.
- Enter clear and concise documentation in the SBO health information system(s).
- Review and verify insurance eligibility and correspondence.
- Maintain knowledge of department and organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
- Support Lean principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.
- Provide and maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
- Conduct all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting ethically and reporting known or suspected violations.
- Support the vision, mission, and values of the organization in all respects.
- Deliver customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient, and accurate.
- Perform additional duties of similar complexity as required or assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED (required).
- Certification: Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP), Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR), Certified Specialist Account and Finance (CSAF), or Certified Specialist Payment and Reimbursement (CSPR) (preferred).
- Experience: Two years of experience in a healthcare setting or other relevant office environment (preferred).
