Field Tech/ Sr. Field Tech - Power Systems Tech I, II, III, or IV

Field Technicians and Power Systems Technicians perform service, test, and maintenance on various types of power transmission and distribution equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up, and collect data of low, medium, and/or high voltage (to 500kV) electrical systems.
  • Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment, including relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Develop and document standardized commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for relay systems.
  • Perform functional testing of substation control circuits to validate proper relay operation.
  • Create relay macros and testing routines to confirm system protection and control configurations.
  • Execute end-to-end relay testing with specialized software, identifying relay behavior based on fault conditions.
  • Review relay settings and logic equations to ensure alignment with design requirements.
  • Perform low, medium, and/or high voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing.
  • Inspect, maintain, test, and repair transformers, circuit breakers, and related equipment (45 KVA to 130 MVA, dry type and/or oil filled).
  • Maintain, test, recondition, and repair circuit breakers (low voltage 480 volt molded case and air-magnetic; medium voltage up to 15 KV air-magnetic and vacuum).
  • Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.
  • Operate high voltage test equipment including Doble Power Factor test sets.
  • Perform start-up, troubleshooting, and repair services on controls and transfer schemes.
  • Rotate emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all work and decisions comply with regulatory laws.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Requirements

Qualifications vary by position level:

  • Field Tech / Power Systems Tech I:
    • High School diploma/GED and minimum 1 year of experience in a related field.
    • Knowledge of industry standards such as NETA, NEC, OSHA, and NFPA.
    • Experience with MCCs, breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, or performing start-up on switchgear up through 500kV class (or military training such as Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, NAVY, or related programs).
    • Ability to work safely and adhere to electrical safety procedures.
    • Strong theoretical understanding of electricity and problem-solving aptitude.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Dependable, responsible, with good judgment and organizational skills.
    • Strong customer service, time management, and follow-up skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with customers, peers, and management.
    • Strong computer skills, including Windows and Microsoft Office.
    • Valid driver’s license for positions requiring a company vehicle.
  • Power Systems Tech II:
    • High School diploma/GED and minimum 2 years of experience in a related field.
    • NETA Level II Certification.
    • Direct supervision required; sufficient knowledge to ensure personal safety and understanding of lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and shock hazard analyses.
    • Same experience and skills as Tech I, with added responsibility for safety of others.
  • Power Systems Tech III:
    • High School diploma/GED and minimum 5 years of experience in a related field.
    • NETA Level III Certification.
    • Ability to mentor and lead Tech I and II, manage routine and moderately complex tasks, and perform electrical power switching.
    • Responsibility for the safety of others and evaluation of test data.
  • Power Systems Tech IV:
    • Associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience, and minimum 5 years of experience (or 10 years of related experience).
    • NETA Level IV Certification.
    • Ability to mentor and lead Tech I, II, and III, supervise large projects and multiple crews, and work independently.
    • Perform complex investigations, tests, evaluations, and prepare written reports.

Pay

Pay range for Field Tech/Power Systems Tech I to IV is $25 to $65 per hour, depending on skillset, certification, and experience. Eligible for overtime.

Schedule

Full-time position with up to 75-90% travel. Daily meal and incidentals per diem available for overnight travel.
