About the role

At TDS Telecom, we connect people through cutting-edge fiber internet technology to strengthen communities. As a Field Service Technician II, you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems). This role involves splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will have direct customer interaction, proactively selling TDS services and products such as Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high-speed networks while exceeding customer expectations.

You may also perform additional duties to meet TDS demands, including those of other Field Services Technician positions. Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, you must reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the Happy Jack, AZ warehouse (2407 Blue Ridge Dr, Happy Jack, AZ 86024). Frequent overnight travel to other TDS service areas in Arizona is required. This position is eligible for a $2,000 sign-on bonus (payout terms apply).

Responsibilities

  • Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
  • Identify and repair defective cable using test equipment for buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable.
  • Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests or construction needs; pole climbing and operating construction equipment is required.
  • Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
  • Maintain an orderly log of all locate requests in the exchange area.
  • Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support and corrections; respond to "trouble" dispatches.
  • Enhance and maintain record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
  • Deliver excellent customer service, educate customers, and sell TDS products and services.
  • Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices for outside plant facilities.

Requirements

  • 1+ year of basic technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain it.
  • Must adhere to TDS attendance guidelines to meet business and customer obligations.
  • Upon hire, successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check.
  • Available for on-call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel.
  • Willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum upon hire.
  • Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of >10,000 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services, including:
    • Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding
    • Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission
    • Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring
    • Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating
    • Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance
    • Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals
    • T-1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing & Certifying Loops for Data/Voice/Video
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications, including:
    • Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems
    • MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, CD-ROMs
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service, sales, and communication skills (verbal and written) for internal and external interactions.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $25.13/hour to $37.69/hour. Actual offers will be based on factors such as skills, qualifications, experience, location, and role-specific competencies. Some positions may also offer additional compensation, such as bonuses or equity awards.
