About the Role

Join Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division as a Field Service Engineer I, where you will deliver technical expertise supporting field startups for both standard and custom switchgear systems. In this role, you will handle warranty claims, perform remedial repairs, and support preventative maintenance contracts within your assigned territory. You will operate under the general direction of the Regional Service Manager.

Driving Innovation Through These Product Lines

  • Caterpillar Switchgear – Integrates low and medium voltage switchgear with Caterpillar engine-generators, utilizing advanced automation such as PLCs and touchscreen HMIs. All programming and testing are completed at our Alpharetta facility.
  • Caterpillar Automatic Transfer Switches – Provides cost-effective emergency power for critical loads during outages.
  • Caterpillar Advanced Electrical Services – Offers service contracts to complete renovations, ensuring customer sites remain safe and operational.

Responsibilities

  • Perform startup, preventative maintenance, testing, repair, and advanced electrical services on generator paralleling controls and switchgear systems.
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction across the assigned territory while supporting on-call service needs (75% travel required).
  • Assist and train internal technicians and external customers on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and equipment testing.
  • Collaborate with the Product Support Center help desk to troubleshoot and resolve customer issues.
  • Support dealer service and sales teams in promoting products and services.
  • Submit daily service reports, weekly expense reports, and maintain accurate project documentation in a timely manner.
  • Stay current on training for new and updated systems, technologies, and platforms.
  • Gather feedback to identify opportunities for new products and improvements to existing offerings.
  • Evaluate manufacturing and production processes to identify defects and recommend design modifications to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Track, manage, and ensure resolution of product quality and performance issues.
  • Communicate technical specifications and service instructions clearly to ensure optimal product performance.

Requirements

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET); alternatively, at least 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineers, contractors, consultants, and end users.
  • Knowledge of power systems, including switchgear, ATS, and generator systems, with ability to read electrical schematics and blueprints.
  • Experience with automation and controls, including PLC-based systems, HMIs, and distributed control systems.
  • PLC experience with one or more: Modicon/Schneider, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or GE.
  • HMI experience preferred (e.g., Rockwell FactoryTalk, Siemens, Vijeo, iFix, Wonderware).
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience or 4 years of equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet background, drug, and medical requirements.
  • U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Electricians are highly preferred for this role.

Pay

Pay Range: $89,210.00 - $133,810.00. Compensation and benefits may vary depending on job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience.

Schedule

  • Remote (U.S.-based) with a travel requirement of up to 75%.
  • Salaried non-exempt position with overtime eligibility.
  • Position may require Special Government Clearance: passing a US Government background check may be required as a job requirement.
