About the role

The UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity and the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control Research (CPCR) are co-located within the Center for Health Sciences (CHS) building on the UCLA campus. The UCLA Kaiser Permanete Center for Health Equity was established in 2004 to address disparities in health status and health care in the United States. The Center conducts community-partnered intervention research in health promotion and disease prevention to mitigate disparities. The CPCR is a joint program of the Fielding School of Public Health and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and leads efforts in population-based cancer prevention and control research. In addition to conducting research, both Centers have a strong focus on community outreach and engagement including conducting education and capacity building activities particularly in Los Angeles and surrounding counties.

Responsibilities

• Identify and engage community partners
• Conduct stakeholder interviews and community consultations to assess local priorities, needs and assets
• Develop and coordinate community training and capacity-building activities
• Develop and disseminate culturally responsive educational and outreach materials
• Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of community-partnered health disparities research projects
• Support the collection and synthesis of information from community settings to assess current outreach and research efforts, identify unmet needs, and help guide future program and research directions
• Facilitate relationship-building, field research activities and support, and ongoing engagement with community stakeholders

Qualifications

• 2+ years Experience conducting community outreach, stakeholder engagement and partnership development in underserved and ethnic minority communities
• 2+ years Experience facilitating meetings, trainings, workshops, and community forums with diverse audiences
• 2+ years Experience providing technical support to agencies in the greater Los Angeles region, including community-based organizations and safety net health care providers
• 2+ years Experience working in or with diverse organizations in Los Angeles County and knowledge of resources and needs of multiple neighborhoods within Los Angeles County
• 1+ years Experience in project management, including planning, implementation, timeline development, and monitoring of complex initiatives
• 1+ years Research experience, including knowledge of research methods and terminology, data collection, human subjects research protections and IRB requirements
• 2+ years Experience developing and managing online communication with diverse community groups and members, including via e-newsletters, website and/or social media
• 1+ years Experience supervising students and staff
• Knowledge of heath equity, social determinants of health, and factors contributing to health disparities among diverse populations
• Knowledge of community health promotion, program evaluation, and capacity-building approaches that support sustainable community-academic partnerships
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with researchers, staff, students, and diverse community members
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across research, clinical, and community settings
• Demonstrated writing and proofreading skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, proposals and other materials for distribution to diverse audiences
• Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills with sound judgement and initiative
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously while maintaining high-quality standards and meeting established deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to use online research resources, virtual engagement platforms, and digital communication tools to facilitate community-engaged research
• Transportation to be able to travel to community sites in Los Angeles and surrounding areas
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
• Spanish Fluency
