Field Instrument and Electrical Specialist

Primary Responsibilities

  • Respond to escalated instrumentation, electrical, and control system failures at water and wastewater treatment sites.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex faults across PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred), SCADA systems, HMI interfaces, and field control networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
  • Perform in-depth loop checks, signal tracing, and fault isolation across 4-20mA, HART, and digital I/O circuits.
  • Assess site conditions, develop rapid troubleshooting plans, and execute repairs with minimal disruption to plant operations.
  • Perform testing, diagnostic, and repair work on motors, motor control circuits, VFDs, relay logic, and programmable relays.
  • Conduct infrared thermography, insulation resistance testing (megger), and power quality analysis as needed.
  • Read, interpret, and redline electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and as-built drawings; update site documentation following repairs.
  • Ensure all electrical work is performed in strict compliance with NFPA 70E arc flash safety standards and site-specific LOTO procedures.
  • Perform precision calibration, loop tuning, and verification of process instruments using appropriate reference standards and calibration equipment.
  • Conduct as-found / as-left documentation and maintain calibration records in accordance with regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Advise site staff on instrument selection, installation best practices, and preventive maintenance intervals.
  • Identify recurring or systemic equipment/system issues across the portfolio and escalate to management with recommendations.
  • Assist with capital project planning by providing field assessments and technical input on aging or failing systems.

Skill Set

Expert-level reading and interpretation of electrical schematics, P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, and control panel layouts.
Proficiency with calibration and test equipment: loop calibrators, multimeters, meggers, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
Strong working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and OSHA electrical safety and LOTO requirements.
Familiarity with water/wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and instrumentation applications preferred.
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in unfamiliar facility environments.
Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical issues to non-technical operators and managers.
Self-directed and highly organized; able to manage travel logistics, prioritize multiple site requests, and work with minimal supervision.

Education And Experience

&l MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience)
Associate’s degree in an electronic related field or equivalent experience.
Substantial experience in a process control environment, typically five or more years with demonstrated competency.
Valid driver’s license.
