About the role

The Port Aransas Ferry Operation runs a fleet of 8 ferries, including three 20-car ferries and five 28-car ferries. The operation crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel between Aransas Pass Harbor Island to Port Aransas, on Mustang Island. The route typically takes less than ten minutes, but peak summer hours may require drivers to wait longer. The operation is open 24/7, 365 days a year and serves as an evacuation route for the City of Port Aransas during a hurricane event.

Responsibilities

  • Ferryboat Deckhand I: Perform duties as ferryboat oiler. Assist in the daily inspection of emergency firefighting, lifesaving, and childbirth equipment. Assist in the repair or renovation of motor ferry vessels as directed. Attend to passenger needs and perform cleanup and maintenance duties. Ensure strict compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Participate in drills and exercises. Perform deck evolutions, operate safety gates and vehicle loading ramps, direct, space, park, and block vehicles, and maintain security around the decks. Pump out bilges as needed. Read all gauges and fluid levels in the engine room and report any problems to the captain. Report all observations, actions, and matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety, and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles, and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ferryboat Deckhand II: In addition to the above duties, duties for a Ferryboat Deckhand II include conducting the daily inspection of all emergency firefighting, lifesaving, and childbirth equipment on the vessel. Perform duties of first deckhand. Stand lookout watch and assist the ferryboat captain in maneuvering vessels in high-density traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions in accordance with the Inland Navigation Rules of the Road and the rules of good seamanship. Perform duties as ferryboat oiler. Assist in the repair or renovation of motor ferry vessels as directed. Serve as secondary enforcement authority for state regulations governing operation of the ferries. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ferryboat Deckhand III: In addition to the above duties, duties for a Ferryboat Deckhand III include serving as a lead worker and the related tasks. Serve as loading supervisor when working as first deckhand. Perform duties as first deckhand, and as required, as a ferryboat oiler. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ferryboat Deckhand I: No education or experience required.
  • Ferryboat Deckhand II: 12 months in ferry deckhand-related work (can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
  • Ferryboat Deckhand III: 36 months in ferry deckhand-related work (can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Qualifications

  • Vessel Crew Member Certificate.
  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate.

  • Methods and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of marine equipment, machinery, facilities, and ferryboats.
  • Emergency response procedures.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.

  • Ferryboat Deckhand IA: $35,439.00-$52,388.00.
  • Ferryboat Deckhand IIA: $38,976.00-$58,045.00.
  • Ferryboat Deckhand IIIA: $42,976.00-$64,469.00.
