Responsibilities
The Ferrous Scrap Buyer is responsible for marketing ferrous scrap within the region, positioning and procuring material for designated consumers, and optimizing supply lanes within the assigned territory. This role partners closely with the trading team, mills, recycling operations, and external suppliers to optimize scrap flows, quality, pricing, and freight while improving customer value and recycling margins.
What You'll Do
- Manage the assigned trading territory in a way that reflects the company’s culture and supports strong stakeholder relationships
- Position the territory’s ferrous scrap
- Cook the territory’s ferrous scrap position with the Trading team to align with regional goals
- Build and maintain strong internal relationships with mill and recycling teams at all levels
- Develop strong external relationships with key third party consumers, mills and foundries
- Apply a trading mindset to optimize scrap flows, quality, pricing, and freight across mills and recycling plants
- Monitor market trends and communicate developments to stakeholders in a timely manner
- Drive administrative efficiency improvements (e.g., vendor portal utilization and process enhancements)
- Partner with Logistics to reduce freight costs and improve asset efficiency
What You'll Need
- Experience in ferrous scrap, metals trading, recycling, steel mill procurement/sales, commodities, or a closely related industrial commercial role (level to be aligned to the position’s scope)
- Pricing and negotiation, relationship management, market analysis, margin and cost optimization, and disciplined deal execution
- Ability to work cross-functionally with mills, recycling operations, and logistics to optimize freight and material flow
- Clear, timely communication of market trends and internal/external updates
- Comfort with standard business systems (spreadsheets, ERP/CRM tools) and process improvement
