Duties And Responsibilities

  • Relieve regular line officers from performing auxiliary tasks and other functions.
  • Assist in crowd and traffic control during various events and disasters.
  • Assist in searching crime scenes for evidence.
  • Practice traffic direction and control.
  • Provide first aid and CPR certification.
  • Receive firearms training and defensive tactics.
  • Participate in community functions such as state fairs, parades, cruises, and funerals.
  • Perform surveillance projects and report findings via radio.
  • Search crime scenes for evidence under the supervision of the Detective Bureau.
  • Engage in patrols during specific events like Halloween and Devil's Night.
  • Support the Ferndale Police Department in various ceremonial and memorial activities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Background check without criminal record.
  • Pass an oral board interview.
  • Approval and acceptance by the Ferndale Police Department command staff.

Uniforms

  • Provided with shirts, pants, hats, badges, coats, bullet-resistant vests, and name badges.
  • Required to purchase a department-approved firearm, leather gear, flashlights, whistles, rain hat covers, radio holsters, pepper spray case, and other incidentals.
  • Cost of equipment can exceed $1,500.

  • 120 hours of classroom and range time covering 14 topics including public relations, criminal law, civil liability, vehicle stops, mechanics of arrest, patrol techniques, police communication, report writing, drunk driving enforcement, traffic direction and control, first aid, narcotics and dangerous drugs, firearms training, defensive tactics, OC (pepper spray) training, CPR/First-Aid Certification, and more.
