Fence Crew Lead (Occasional)

About the Role

Under general supervision, supervises, directs, and coordinates the activities of the Fence Crew engaged in routine manual labor-intensive tasks necessary to maintain, repair, and install the Tohono O'odham Nation's boundary fence. Responsibilities include various maintenance tasks, light carpentry work, metal fence framing, and general knowledge of the exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Requires knowledge and sensitivity to Sonoran desert plants, environment, and animals. Extended shift scheduling may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and supervision to fence crew.
• Observes all safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to self, others, or equipment.
• Submits weekly and monthly written reports.
• Reviews work process during and upon completion to ensure proper placement of fence line.
• Aligns posts using lines or by sighting and verifies vertical alignment of posts.
• Measures, layouts, and marks posthole positions following instructions, drawings, or specifications.
• Digs postholes using spades, posthole diggers, or power-driven augers.
• Stretches wire, wire mesh, or chain link fencing between posts and attaches to fencing frames.
• Orders and delivers fencing materials to project locations.
• Maintains inventory to complete project.
• Mixes and pours posthole concrete.
• Performs maintenance and repair on the Nation's boundary fence line.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
• Five (5) years' work experience in fence construction or related field.
• Six (6) months to 1 year of preferred supervisory experience.
• Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
• May require possessing and maintaining a valid Arizona driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
• If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
• Based on department needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
