Fellow in Congenital Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (ST6+ equivalent)

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Fellow in Paediatric Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (ST6+) based at the Freeman Hospital. The post is available from August 2026 for 12 months and is suitable for a senior trainee (ST6/7, post CCT, or equivalent) considering a career in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia.

Responsibilities

• Pre-operative assessment and provision of congenital cardiac anaesthesia for cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac catheterisation procedures under direct or local supervision.
• Participation in the on-call rota for paediatric cardiothoracic intensive care as part of an approximately 8-person full shift system.
• Broad experience in paediatric and adult congenital cardiac anaesthesia, including cardiopulmonary transplantation, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, and paediatric thoracic anaesthesia.

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

• Essential:
  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months.
  • Previous experience in at least two of: general paediatric anaesthesia, adult cardiac anaesthesia, paediatric intensive care, or paediatric cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
• Desirable:
  • Interest in increasing paediatric/congenital cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care experience, with consideration of this as a long-term career option.
  • Postgraduate qualification in anaesthesia (FRCA or equivalent).
  • Previous advanced training (Special Interest Area, post-CCT fellowship, or equivalent) in at least one of: general paediatric anaesthesia, adult cardiac anaesthesia, or paediatric intensive care.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

• Essential:
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis and order appropriate investigations.
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice.
  • Knows when to seek assistance from a senior colleague.
  • Range of clinical skills appropriate for a senior trainee or post-CCT level.
• Desirable:
  • Knowledge of congenital heart disease in children and adults, and its management.

Maintaining Clinical Competence

• Essential: Written evidence of satisfactory training to date (e.g., workplace assessments).

Teaching

• Essential: Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students and Foundation Doctors.
• Desirable: Participation in a medical education training programme or qualification.

Clinical Governance, Audit, and Research

• Essential: Experience of audit projects.
• Desirable: Evidence of recent research.
