The largest diagnostic and acute care hospital in the West Kootenays, the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is a 75-bed full service regional hospital serving 80,000 people in the Kootenay Boundary region. KBRH offers core specialist physician services including 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Services, Level 2 Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Acute and Obstetrical Care, Orthopedics, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Chemotherapy and advanced diagnostic services. KBRH is the regional base for the 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART) consisting of dedicated critical care transport nurses, and as required, respiratory therapists, who respond to support rural and remote clinicians in the transport and management of critically ill and injured patients. Transport is supported by BC Ambulance Services (BCAS) for major medical care with transfer to Kelowna that is 313 kilometers from Trail.

About the role

We are actively recruiting a 0.4 to 1.0 FTE General Practitioner Oncologist (GPO) to join Dr. Katie Forman in the GP Oncology Program at KBRH. The selected physician will deliver a range of cancer services to patients with all possible tumor sites. They will help to manage oncology patients primarily in the outpatient setting but also support inpatient, indirect and remote care; this GPO will help care for patients throughout their entire treatment pathway including primary treatment through survivorship.

Responsibilities

• Supervision of treatment using chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy
• Patient education, supportive care, and end of life/palliative care planning
• Active communication and participation with various multidisciplinary cancer program oncologist teams to ensure safe and effective care
• Managing acute toxicities, dose adjustment and modifying treatment plans
• Support for infusions and visit summaries
• Ongoing surveillance and monitoring of patients that have completed their treatment to monitor for cancer recurrence or treatment related complications
• Maintain regular communication with the specialist regarding the plan of care and practice collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
• Act as a resource to the oncology patient’s primary care provider and other health care providers on issues related to the care of cancer patients (e.g., providing guidance during work-up of suspected cancer patients, addressing questions related to referral process, sharing information related to management of cancer patients)

Qualifications

• No previous experience in oncology is required
• The department will support the successful applicant in developing the requisite expertise for the role

GP Oncology Training Information

The mandatory GP oncology training is an 8 week course, including 4 weeks online didactic learning and 6 weeks of practical training with the BC Cancer Agency. The next training session is TBD via Virtual Delivery.

• Estimated Remuneration: Competitive
• Physician Overhead: No overhead costs

Benefits and Incentives

• May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) including:
  • Retention Premium: 11.48%
  • Retention Flat Fee: $17,791
• Relocation Funding Available: $9,000 - $15,000 (based on move location)
• Recruitment Incentive: $15,000 based on FT
• Rural Incentives are subject to change and current rates are confirmed at time of offer.
