About The Position

Pittsburg State University invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Biology. The Chair serves as the chief administrative officer of the department and provides strategic leadership in academic, personnel, facility, and financial matters. This role ensures that departmental goals align with the missions of the University, College, and Department. The administrative appointment is at the pleasure of the President.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead departmental operations including faculty appointments, promotions, tenure, and evaluations.

  • Guide the development and implementation of curriculum and oversee academic programs.

  • Develop class schedules, assign teaching loads, and conduct departmental meetings.

  • Manage assessment, long-range planning, and accreditation efforts.

  • Mentor faculty and support professional development, recruitment, and retention initiatives.

  • Supervise administrative staff, ensuring compliance with university policies and performance reviews.

  • Administer departmental budgets and oversee expenditures for general use, scholarships, grants, and travel.

  • Foster strong community and university relations, including fundraising and donor engagement.

  • Maintain departmental facilities and collaborate with the physical plant on space and resource needs.

  • Promote a collegial atmosphere and address concerns from faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni.

Teaching

Contribute to academic program planning, course instruction, and student advising. Teaching load determined in consultation with the Dean.

Service

Engage in institutional, professional, and community service activities as defined through the annual Unclassified Performance Management Process.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Biology or a related field.

  • Five (5) years of experience in college-level teaching, research, and service.

  • Proven academic leadership and administrative experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and professional relationship skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Note

Candidates must hold a terminal degree in Biology or a related discipline to meet accreditation standards and demonstrate advanced expertise.
