Faculty Positions in Environmental Health, Boston University School of Public Health
Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), Department of Environmental Health seeks faculty candidates for positions starting Spring/Summer 2027. We are primarily hiring at the Assistant Professor level but will consider higher ranks. The salary range is $145,000 – $230,000, with final compensation based on qualifications, experience, education, and internal equity.

The Department of Environmental Health invites versatile, collaborative, and creative faculty who are motivated to improve population health by addressing environmental health challenges and inequities. We prioritize candidates with active external funding to support their research and scholarship at BUSPH.

The department is internationally recognized for innovation in research, teaching, and practice, with 17 primary faculty members working on pressing environmental health issues, including:
- Health effects of contaminants (metals, PFAS, air pollutants, complex mixtures)
- Extreme weather and climate change impacts
- Energy systems and sustainability
- Water and sanitation
- Military environmental health
- Emerging diseases of global significance
- Environmental and social justice
The department offers MPH certificates in Environmental Health and Justice & Climate Change and Health, a PhD program in Environmental Health, and hosts the school-wide Center for Climate and Health. Faculty collaborate with other centers, including the Center for Trauma and Mental Health and the Center for Health Data Science, as well as university-wide initiatives like the Institute for Global Sustainability and the Hariri Institute for Computing.
Responsibilities
- Lead an independent research program
- Engage in collaborative research with departmental and university partners
- Teach and mentor master’s and doctoral-level students
- Provide service to the department, university, and profession
Requirements
- PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in environmental health or a related field
- Active external funding to support research and scholarship at BUSPH
- Commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching, education, and mentorship
Qualifications
We welcome applicants from diverse disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Exposure science
- Epidemiology
- Toxicology
- Risk/health impact assessment
- Data science
Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to connect research with public health practice, research translation, or science communication. While the search is open to all areas of environmental health, we are particularly interested in applicants working on the challenges listed above.
Pay
- Assistant Professor: $145,000 – $165,000 per year (primary hiring focus)
- Associate/Full Professor: $165,000 – $230,000 per year
Final salary and rank placement will be determined based on academic record, research background, and qualifying experience.
