Non-Tenure Track Clinical Faculty Position in Environmental Sustainability

About the Role

The O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (O’Neill) at Indiana University, Bloomington seeks a sustainability professional with deep experience in environmental sustainability (including environmental sustainability intermingled with social and/or economic sustainability) to join the faculty as a full-time, non-tenure track, clinical assistant professor or, for exceptionally qualified candidates, clinical associate professor.

The clinical faculty track requires teaching as well as public or professional service that can include applied research and providing professional/technical expertise to public, professional, and nonprofit organizations (e.g., as a consultant). Clinical faculty may advance to higher rank and long-term contracts based on excellence in teaching or service.

The successful candidate will leverage their professional expertise to provide students with applied, interdisciplinary learning experiences that prepare them to address real-world sustainability challenges and will mentor students as rising professionals. They will also provide leadership on initiatives that strengthen the School’s visibility, impact, and connections to practice in sustainability.

The long-term teaching load for clinical faculty is typically 6 courses per year, possibly with lighter starting loads and reductions to balance heavy service loads when those arise. Clinical faculty are not eligible for tenure but will be considered for promotion and/or long-term contracts no later than the sixth year of appointment.

The expected start date is August 1, 2027.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in environmental sustainability and related topics, including traditional classroom instruction, experiential and active learning, and project-based courses and practica that may include collaborations with external partners.
• Maintain active engagement with the professional field of sustainability.
• Mentor students as rising professionals in sustainability.
• Provide leadership on initiatives that enhance the School’s visibility, impact, and connections to sustainability practice.
• Contribute to public or professional service, which may include applied research or consulting for public, professional, and nonprofit organizations.

Requirements

• Advanced degree (master’s or doctoral) in environment/sustainability or a related field.
• Candidates with a terminal master’s degree should have at least ten years of professional practice in the field.
