About the role
This position is part of the Buildings and Grounds department within the Facilities Department of the University. The Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Grounds) maintains campus cleanliness and horticultural areas using both mechanical and hand methods.
Schedule
Non-winter months: Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Winter months: 2nd and/or 3rd shift, including weekends, as assigned based on seniority.
Responsibilities
- Remove refuse and debris manually or using equipment such as sweepers and litter vacuums.
- Empty trash containers on campus and assist with garbage pickup using a garbage packer.
- Clean sidewalks using manual methods (sweeping) or power washing.
- Perform horticultural tasks, including:
- Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Pruning trees and shrubs from ground level or using a man-lift.
- Removing weeds from planting beds.
- Repairing damaged turf using manual methods (shoveling, raking, rototilling).
- Maintaining proper grass height using hand mowers, self-propelled mowers, and riding mowers.
- Remove snow and ice from paved surfaces using hand shoveling, salting, and mechanical equipment.
- Respond to departmental seasonal needs to contribute to campus safety as requested by the supervisor.
