OPEN RECRUITMENT – The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities across the State of Maryland, including four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes. With over 50 years of service, MDTA ensures safe, secure, and convenient transportation for Maryland’s citizens and visitors.

About the role

This position serves as the crew leader for maintenance or construction work on MDTA facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, or adjacent areas within the Maryland Department of Transportation. Work is performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside MDOT buildings, requiring physical exertion. Employees may need to move objects over 50 pounds, work at high elevations, or in cramped quarters. This role is considered essential, with potential 24-hour call-in requirements to maintain facility operations. Shift work may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The current vacancy is located at the John F. Kennedy Maintenance II facility in Cecil County, MD. The eligible list from this recruitment may also fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled work crews at each phase of a project.
  • Ensure correct use of materials and equipment.
  • Ensure work is completed in a timely manner consistent with MDTA’s specific and standard procedures.
  • Lead lower-level Facilities Maintenance Technicians.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections of specialized areas and features throughout the facility.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters (e.g., tunnels, underground, or buildings).
  • Maintain availability for duty at any hour to ensure continuous and safe facility operation.
  • Maintain a reliable communication link at personal expense for emergency call-back requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience in construction, facilities maintenance, or skilled trades work.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), valid in Maryland, including a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver) renewed every two years.
  • Willingness to undergo periodic medical testing, hazardous materials training, and respirator use if working with hazardous materials (e.g., asbestos, lead-based paint, chromium).
  • Agreement to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
  • Subject to pre-employment and ongoing substance abuse testing per Maryland Transportation Code regulations.
  • Compliance with Department of Budget and Management policies for operating State-owned vehicles.
  • Potential requirement to complete administration-specific training and certification programs during probation or for permanent status.
