Facilities Manager – Equipment Room & Scheduling
About the Department
The University of Chicago’s Department of Athletics & Recreation serves the fitness, physical recreation, and athletic needs of the University community. The Department sponsors 20 intercollegiate teams and 570 student-athletes, over 40 club sports, and a diverse intramural program with approximately 8,500 student participants annually. Open recreation opportunities are available in two indoor facilities, outdoor fields, courts, and a running track, with an average daily usage of 2,100 students, faculty, and staff.
About the Role
Assist in the management of the University of Chicago’s athletic and recreational facilities. Oversee the equipment room and supervise personnel needed to accomplish these tasks. Contribute to event management for varsity contests and manage the master schedule for all facilities.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the management of athletic and recreational facilities.
- Manage the Equipment Room, including ordering equipment, clothing, and laundry supplies; maintaining inventory; and implementing distribution systems.
- Supervise personnel, including lifeguards, front desk staff, fitness center staff, Locker Room Attendants, and student staff. Responsibilities include hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining personnel, as well as administering overtime assignments and adhering to union and safety guidelines.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the Equipment Room and employees.
- Coordinate laundry services and manage locker-clean-out and Lost and Found systems.
- Negotiate and oversee service contracts with vendors (e.g., washer/dryers, detergent, clothing).
- Develop and maintain schedules for all athletic/recreational facilities, resolve scheduling conflicts, and distribute schedule information.
- Oversee evening facilities security, risk management, and event management, including supervision of Athletic Aides at assigned events.
- Develop strong working relationships with department staff, vendors, outside groups, students, and members, emphasizing customer service.
- Attend and participate in weekly Facilities Management meetings.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews and recommend changes as appropriate.
- Analyze program budgets and make budgetary recommendations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- College or university degree in a related field.
- Less than 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
- Significant and relevant work experience in facility management in a collegiate setting (preferred).
- Driver’s license (preferred).
- CPR/First Aid certification (may be fulfilled upon employment).
- Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Pay
Pay range: $48.00 - $55.00 per hour.
