About the role

The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing all preventative, on-demand, and improvement maintenance activities. This position also oversees the upkeep, ongoing maintenance, and improvements of safety and security equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to building systems, including electrical, lighting, HVAC, boilers, plumbing, backup power, and life safety systems.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot critical systems, make repairs, or refer problems to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Review all work and ensure compliance with established safety procedures, Standard Operation Procedures (SOP), and Quality Management System.
  • Conduct frequent inspections of the facility, grounds, and equipment.
  • Perform monthly preventive maintenance tasks and reactive work orders as assigned.
  • Report equipment, facility, and/or safety issues to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Maintain all appropriate paperwork, including daily logs, timesheets, routine, and non-routine maintenance records.
  • Aid with miscellaneous building projects, such as painting, drywall, carpentry, fixture installation, and equipment relocation.
  • Handle emergency responses during after-hours shifts on a rotating schedule.
  • Manage inventory of spare parts or supplies based on actual and/or projected usage.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and current experience in facility operations and maintenance.
  • Advanced training or certifications in electrical, HVAC, or steam boilers are preferred.
  • Working knowledge of various hand and power tools, pumps, fans, blowers, and control valves.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC, steam boilers, and facility environmental control systems.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain tools, supplies, and work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Active driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between facilities.
  • Overtime and weekend work as required (on-call).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Good documentation practices.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Experience with PPE (personal protective equipment).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work around laboratory animals.
