About the role

The Facilities Generalist at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a member of the facility operations team. This role performs building and exhibit maintenance, participates in event set-up and take-down, and assists with general cleaning and care of the building and grounds. The position plays a first-tier role in building maintenance and upkeep, utilizing a tiered, shared-resources approach rooted in cross-training and teamwork. The generalist has opportunities to learn and practice a variety of skills and trades, with potential for growth through added responsibilities and increased knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance, cleaning, and care of the building and campus.
  • Assists with set-up, transportation, and take-down of equipment for museum events, programs, and rentals (e.g., tables, chairs, banners, pipe and drape). Ensures set-ups are completed on time and accurately.
  • Gathers and transports trash/waste on campus using carts and designated museum vehicles.
  • Assists with outside grounds maintenance, including snow removal and campus cleanup.
  • Conducts thorough daily inspections of designated building areas and outdoor spaces, reporting concerns promptly.
  • Works alongside skilled labor to assist with basic building and exhibit maintenance and repairs, such as painting, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and carpentry work. May assist with repairs requiring the use of a lift (training provided).
  • Assists with the regular care and maintenance of the historic carousel.
  • Safely and efficiently operates handheld power equipment, including hand tools and landscaping equipment.

The Children’s Museum is open six to seven days per week, with the outdoor Sports Legends Experience open from mid-March through October. The Facilities Generalist may be required to work a flexible and varying schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years’ experience in industrial or large public facility housekeeping, grounds, or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow.
  • Proven track record of reliability and dependability.
  • Ability to work some holidays, nights, and weekends when scheduled.
  • Ability to vary normal work schedule as needed to provide adequate coverage for museum operations.
  • Operational knowledge of and experience using commercial cleaning, landscaping equipment, or maintenance tools preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and methods of building and campus maintenance.
  • Analytical skills to use telephones, keep accurate written records, and basic knowledge of computer systems and two-way radio systems.
  • Special consideration given to multi-lingual applicants.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to view computer monitors, facility-related documents, and observe museum environments, visitors, and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate extensively via telephone, in-person conversations, and two-way radios with visitors, staff, and guests.
  • Ability to respond to on-call alerts as needed.
  • Ability to kneel, sit, or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to traverse the building and campus multiple times daily.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.).
  • Tolerance for dust in indoor environments and extreme temperatures/humidity outdoors.
  • Ability to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks at heights up to seventy feet.
