F&W-2026-12 Information Technology Specialist

35-hour work week, open to the general public. Location: Department of Environmental Protection, Fish and Wildlife Business Administration, 501 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625.

About the role

Under direct supervision in a state department, this position assists in at least one of the following areas:

• Design and preparation of least complex operation routines and computer programs for electronic data processing equipment using required and current software, operating systems, and multiprogramming technology.
• Control and/or implementation/maintenance of highly technical operating systems to optimize hardware/software utilization.
• Development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network, multi-user Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and/or Wide Area Networks (WAN), including network security, performance monitoring, problem resolution, and user support.

Specific to this position:

• Install, configure, upgrade, and troubleshoot hardware and software components on agency computers or information technology systems.
• Provide informal training and assistance to agency employees or the general public.
• Training in DEP's Division of Information and Technology acquisition management policies and procedures.
• Specialized training in virtual meeting platforms and web hosting services.
• Review, prepare, and submit for approval all IT acquisitions/purchases to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and policies.
• Initiate and monitor the progress of IT projects at the program's request, maintaining an inventory of all projects and purchases.
• Participate on teams implementing IT systems changes, provide technical guidance on complex IT issues to senior management, and serve as primary liaison with agency employees and the public on web-hosting platform operations and support.

Requirements

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree in Computer Science or Computer/Information Technology.

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science may substitute for one year of the required experience. A general Bachelor's degree may substitute for the Associate's degree.

Experience

One year of experience in at least one of the following areas:

• Design and preparation of programs for electronic data processing using current operating systems, modification of systems software, and multiprogramming technology.
• Development, maintenance, or installation of application programs.
• Technical support functions within a direct access device environment, including resolution of online production and/or communications network problems, code modification, testing, debugging of program modules, and space allocation/control of direct access storage devices (DASD management).
• Development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network, multi-user Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and/or Wide Area Networks (WAN).

Experience in work methods/processes, data analysis, systems/program design, multiprogramming computer systems, or data processing support may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis (30 semester hour credits = 1 year of experience).

Formal training in Computer Science/Information Technology from an accredited institution may be submitted for evaluation (16 training hours = 1 college credit). In-house training courses are not accepted.

Preferred Skills

• Evaluate proposals for IT products or services to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and acquisition policies.
• Understand project management principles, methods, and technical requirements; communicate complex issues to senior management.
• Participate in DEP IT CORE Team meetings.
• Assist employees/public in installing applications and troubleshoot post-installation problems.

Additional Information

• Appointees must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license if vehicle operation is necessary for essential duties.
• New hires must establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey within one year of employment (per the "New Jersey First Act").

Pay

$66,592.01 - $97,353.91 annually.
