Experienced P&C Field Services Technician
About the role
This Opportunity Supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Performs assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations
- Executes moderately complex assignments, and contributes to regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity across active job sites
- Provides day-to-day support to field teams, helps resolve challenges on-site, and mentors junior technicians to promote quality, efficiency, and safe work practices
- Supports the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects
- Escalates complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager
- Communicates progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team
- Maintains attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries
- Collaborates with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards
- Affords clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports
- Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
- Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
- Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
- Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
- Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
- Knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers
- Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
- Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions
- Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
- Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
- Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers
- Commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
- Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results
- Ability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments
- Attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
- Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies
- Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
- Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays
- Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers
- Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
