About the role

This Opportunity Supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations
  • Perform on-site hands-on protective relay testing using relay test sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. Examples of relays to be tested are SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60 among others
  • Use field forms, digital data tools, and mobile applications to document site activities
  • Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects
  • Escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager
  • Communicate progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team
  • May review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed
  • Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries
  • Collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards
  • Aid in monitoring subcontractor performance and activities and report observations to field leadership
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
  • Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
  • Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
  • Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
  • Demonstrable knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers
  • Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings
  • Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
  • Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
  • Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers
  • Commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration
  • Capable of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results
  • Ability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments
  • Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies
  • Credentialed with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relay
  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers
  • Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification

Pay

Expected Salary (all locations): $50.00 - $70.00 per hour

Schedule

Up to 80% travel may be required.
